KMA NEW HEADQUATER IN MOMBASA IS 86 PERCENT COMPLETE

The construction of the Sh.1.8 billion new Kenya Maritime Authority (KMA) headquarters building in Mombasa Island has reached 86 percent completion.

This was revealed by Transport Chief Administrative Secretary (CAS) Wavinya Ndeti when she toured the project site at Mbaraki area of the coastal city.

The CAS who was on a supervision tour of the facility said she was satisfied with the project's progress saying that the government is committed to the prosperity and development of the blue economy sector.

The 15-storey iconic complex billed as the tallest building in Mombasa and whose construction began in February 2017, was supposed to have been completed by September 2019.

However, the project was delayed because of “some technical issues’ according to the CAS who said the issues are being addressed.

‘The government and contractor are working round the clock to ensure speedy completion of the project’ she said.

She added that the construction of a new aquarium at the new structure is also what brought the delays in the project completion.

“We had some few issues that caused some a bit of delay, but we have managed to sort them out. We are moving on well and by February next the project will be handed over,” said Ndeti.

Currently, KMA offices are located at a building owned by the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA).

“After KMA moves into this new headquarters, they will not be paying rent anymore. Instead, the people using the facility will be paying KMA,” said Ndeti adding that that will generate revenue for the maritime authority.

According to plans, after completion, the KMA headquarters will house the Maritime Technology Cooperation Centre (MTCC) for the Africa region.

The MTCC is one of the five centres the International Maritime Organization (IMO) will set up globally and has a budget of Sh1.1 billion funded by the European Union.

The CAS says the maritime industry is critical to the overall growth of the country’s economy and urged the KMA and other stakeholders to champion maritime services, training and businesses.

She explained that the construction of the new headquarters will enhance service delivery in the blue economy sector as all KMA services will be housed under one roof for the overall economic benefit of the country.
